A beginner’s guide to AWS certifications

AWS offers a whole family of certifications. This guide explains how they’re structured and where a newcomer should begin.

Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud platform in the world, and AWS certifications are among the most sought-after credentials in IT. If you’re new to cloud, the range of options can be confusing. Here’s how it fits together.

How AWS certifications are structured

AWS groups its certifications into levels and specialities. The main path runs from Foundational, to Associate, to Professional, with additional Speciality certifications for areas like security and networking.

  • Foundational — AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner: a broad, non-technical overview of cloud concepts, services and pricing.
  • Associate — Solutions Architect, Developer and SysOps Administrator: role-based, hands-on certifications.
  • Professional — Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps Engineer: advanced, for experienced practitioners.
  • Speciality — deep dives into specific domains such as security or advanced networking.

Where should a beginner start?

If you’re completely new to cloud, the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the natural starting point. It builds the vocabulary and mental model you’ll need for everything that follows, and it’s achievable without a deep technical background — making it ideal for career changers and non-engineers who work alongside technical teams.

Once you’re comfortable, the Solutions Architect – Associate is the most popular next step. It’s widely recognised, opens doors to cloud roles, and gives you the architecture fundamentals that underpin the professional-level certifications later.

A realistic timeline

Most people can prepare for Cloud Practitioner in a few weeks of focused study, and the Associate level in a couple of months with hands-on practice. Don’t rush — cloud rewards genuine understanding, and the labs you do along the way are what make the knowledge stick.
